RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

The research and development (R&D) team aid the company in staying competitive by investigating and analyzing existing products on the market, as well as trends within the industry. Armed with this information, R&D is able to develop improvements to EPD’s existing products and create new products that fill a market need. Inside EPD’s R&D testing laboratory are:

  • Two fully functional 1.2MW central solar inverters
  • A full power DC solar array simulator
  • Three diesel gen-sets
  • Over 2MW of load banks
  • A 50kwh lithium-ion battery bank
  • A 250kw bi-directional grid converter
  • And several other variable speed drives and motors

DESIGN ENGINEERING

The design engineering group prepares engineering packages for active projects for customers and projects related to R&D initiatives. Deliverables from the design group typically consist of the following:

  • Single line diagrams
  • Equipment layouts
  • Site layouts
  • Major equipment lists
  • Bills of materials
  • Electrical schematics
  • Component layouts
  • Fabrication drawings
  • Cable schedules
  • Performance models
  • Financial models
  • Feasibility studies
  • Power system studies User manuals
  • Installation manuals
  • Work instructions
  • Factory acceptance
  • test procedures
  • Commissioning procedures Automation programming

MULTI-SOURCE POWER SYSTEMS AND STORAGE

EPD is a developer of energy management and power management control systems for microgrid and utility tied projects with multiple energy sources. Many of the solar PV projects EPD has completed required multiple sources of energy and energy storage, adding significant complexity. For those projects, EPD researched and vetted numerous battery technologies including:

  • Lead Acid
  • Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd)
  • Flow Batteries
  • Zinc-air
  • Li-Cobalt (LCO)
  • Li-Manganese (LMO)
  • Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC)
  • Li-Phosphate (LFP)
  • Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum(NCA)
  • Li-Titanate (LTO)
